UTILITY LINE REPLACEMENT
One of Alberta’s largest utility providers needed to replace a 406 mm (16 in) pipeline located under a City of Calgary Golf Course. It was imperative that the construction not impact the fairways or greens. Equally important, the contract required noise abatement measures be put in place to minimize any disruption to neighbours in adjacent townhomes. The original schedule called for the project to take place over winter, but the client pushed the construction timeline back until spring: requiring us to complete part of our installation after the course was open.
The townhomes were a mere 20 m (65.6 ft) from the drill’s exit point, requiring an engineered sound solution. We searched North America to find a supplier capable of meeting our detailed specifications. A temporary three-sided wall and Exit Side Safety Unit was placed at the exit point alongside the condos, while a two-sided wall was installed at the entry point (due to the proximity to several businesses).
The delayed start meant drilling could not be completed prior to the golf season. Rig crews worked efficiently to drill the pilot hole, which required the placement of surface coils across the course, ahead of opening day.
The HDD was completed under budget and ahead of the schedule, and golfers were able to play without any significant disruptions.
