Installing Beneath River & Pathway

PROJECT SUMMARY

St. Albert consistently ranks among the top places to live in Canada and has experienced rapid growth in recent years. The municipality needed to expand the capacity of their sewer system to serve several new residential communities. This required the installation of three new lines under the Sturgeon River, which runs through the heart of the city. The Crossing Company executed three parallel large diameter crossings, each approximately 128 m (420 ft) in length. Two 406 mm (16 in) and one 660 mm (26 in) product lines were pulled back and installed. The project was completed on budget and under schedule: taking just four days.

1 RIVER + 1 MULTI-USE PATH X 3 CROSSING POINTS

KEY CHALLENGES

The crossing points were on designated city parkland with a public-use trail following the riverbank. The municipality required that we install utilities under a city pathway without interfering with pedestrian or bicycle traffic. Additionally, due to the hydraulics of the sewer system, the crossing had to be situated at very shallow depths – leaving little margin for error. The Crossing Company successfully mitigated the technical challenges, while maintaining unimpeded public access to the popular pathway.
