Alternative To Microtunneling
PROJECT SUMMARY
When a new sanitary line was required to go under Fort McMurray’s main thoroughfare, the contractors sent out an RFQ for microtunneling services. After seeing the projected cost, they wanted to explore other options.
The Tunneling Company proposed an alternative solution using a guided boring machine (GBM), which would allow the road to remain open during installation. The GBM had the advantage of a small footprint and the ability to do precise tie-ins.
KEY CHALLENGES
Because the guided boring process was somewhat new to the project partners, The Tunneling Company was heavily involved in the advanced planning and technical consultation.
Precise grade alignment was crucial, as the product was a gravity sanitary line. The GBM was placed in a pit at the entry point. A 102 mm (4 in) guided bore was used to drill the pilot hole that would be required to accurately hit a target at the exit point. The boring drill was then placed on a swivel head to install the 0.61 m (24 in) steel casing which would contain the product line.
The advanced planning and coordination between The Tunneling Company, designer and construction contractor resulted in a flawless installation – at a budget that was agreeable to the client.
